Mass Protest in Buenos Aires for Patagonia's Forests

Residents and activists in Buenos Aires protested at the obelisk, demanding an end to the fires in Patagonia and condemning the government's inaction, which they believe is deliberately facilitating the handover of land to multinational corporations.

Mass Protest in Buenos Aires for Patagonia's Forests

This call, in addition to highlighting the situation and government negligence by both President Milei and Governor Torres, also seeks to strengthen a commitment to our territory, from solidarity with those in the region to the defense of the Glacier Law. The initiative comes from individuals involved in groups like 'Enough of False Solutions' or the 'Out of Mekorot' campaign, who called for an open meeting attended by self-motivated participants. Below we share the call and the agreed-upon poster after the meeting. 'Put out the fire now!'. Saturday, January 31, 6 PM – Obelisco, CABA. This Saturday, we take to the streets for our forests, for those who have lost everything, for the animals, and for firefighters and brigadists who are putting their bodies on the line in extreme labor precariousness. Patagonia is on fire. In Chubut, more than 40,000 hectares have already burned. Puerto Patriada. Epuyén. El Hoyo. Cholilla. Villa Lago Rivadavia. Villa El Blanco. Los Alerces National Park. While they let Chubut burn and hand over these lands, they negotiate our labor rights and push to amend the Glacier Protection Law. This is not an isolated incident or an inevitable tragedy: it is an organized plan of surrender, aimed at expelling communities, aligned with an agenda of appropriation, control of common goods—especially water—and subordination of sovereignty to the economic and strategic interests of the United States and multinational corporations. We condemn the hypocrisy of the provincial government, which calls for a fire emergency while freezing funds for forest protection. This is not a tragedy. It is an organized plan. The State is responsible. Call poster. In Patagonia, 400,000 hectares have already burned, while firefighters in precarious conditions, along with residents, are facing the fire.
